Moʻolelo of Hāloa:

The story of Hāloa has been passed down for generations, carrying with it a powerful haʻawina—one that reminds us of the sacred relationship between people, ʻāina, wai, and the food that sustains us.

In Hawaiian moʻolelo, Hāloa is recognized as the ancestor of the Hawaiian people. When Hoʻohōkūkalani gave birth to her first child, he was stillborn and lovingly buried in the ʻāina. From that place, the very first kalo plant began to grow. Later, she gave birth to another son, also named Hāloa, who became the first Hawaiian person and ancestor to the people of Hawaiʻi.

This story teaches us the deep kuleana between younger and elder siblings—how one must care for the other, and in return, that care is given back. Here, Hāloa cared for his elder sibling, the kalo plant, and in return, kalo nourished him and the generations that followed.

For Hawaiʻi, kalo is far more than a staple crop. It is ancestry, sustenance, and a living reminder of reciprocity—of caring for the land that feeds us, just as it cares for us.

Kalo stood at the heart of the traditional Hawaiian food system, sustaining thriving communities across these islands for generations.

To remember Hāloa is to remember our connection—to ʻāina, to water, to nourishment, and to one another. 🌿
