In Hawaiian, kai means the sea or saltwater—specifically the part of the ocean closest to shore. It holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for Native Hawaiians, as the kai provides food, transportation, cleansing, and connection to the gods and ancestors. The word "kai" is more than just a term for the ocean; it represents life, movement, and the natural cycles that sustain our islands.
Moʻolelo:
One moʻolelo (traditional story) about the kai comes from the island of Kaua‘i. It tells of the goddess Hi‘iakaikapoliopele, the beloved sister of Pele, the volcano goddess. On her journey across the islands, Hi‘iaka visited the shores of Kaua‘i and danced along the kai, chanting to calm the raging surf and awaken the spirits of the land and sea. Her chants were so powerful that the ocean responded, becoming calm and peaceful. Fishermen say that on especially quiet mornings when the waves gently lap the shore, Hi‘iaka is dancing again, reminding all of the harmony that should exist between people and nature.
This story reflects how the kai is seen not just as water, but as a living, responsive force—something to respect and mālama (care for).
