Moʻolelo of Naupaka
Long ago, there was a beautiful aliʻi (chiefess) named Naupaka who fell deeply in love with a man of lower status named Kauʻi (or in some versions, a fisherman).
Their love was strong—but forbidden.
Because of kapu (sacred laws and social boundaries), they were told they could never be together. Heartbroken, they sought guidance from a kahuna (priest), who gave them a single flower.
 
The kahuna told them:
“If your love is meant to be, this flower will be whole.”
But when they looked down, the flower had only half its petals.
Realizing their fate, the lovers made a painful decision:
Naupaka went to the mountains (kuahiwi)
Kauʻi remained by the sea (kahakai)
Separated forever… yet still connected.
 
To this day, the Naupaka flower blooms in two places:
Naupaka Kahakai (by the ocean)
Naupaka Kuahiwi (in the mountains)
Each flower looks like half a blossom.
