Moʻolelo of Ulu
Long ago, during a time of famine, a family struggled to survive. Food was scarce, and a father watched helplessly as his wife and child grew weaker with hunger.
Unable to bear seeing his ʻohana suffer, the father made a difficult decision.
He told his wife that he would go into the forest to find food—but instead, he disappeared. Before leaving, he instructed her to return to a specific place after some time had passed. When she returned, she found that where her husband had once stood, a new tree had grown. This tree bore large, nourishing fruit—unlike anything they had seen before. Realizing the truth, she understood:
Her husband had given his life to become the tree.
That tree was the first ʻulu.
From then on, the ʻulu tree provided abundant food, sustaining not only his family, but generations to come.
